Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has adopted the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the platform for his supporters ahead of the forthcoming Rivers State House of Assembly bye-elections.
Wike has directed his political allies to contest the polls in Ahoada-East Constituency II and Khana Constituency II under the SDP banner, marking a notable shift in alignment in the state’s evolving political landscape.
The bye-elections were scheduled following vacancies in the affected constituencies, though the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to release a detailed timetable for the contests.
Wike, a former Rivers State governor and a key political figure in the South-South region, retains significant grassroots influence in the state despite ongoing divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The decision to back SDP candidates is expected to reshape local political calculations as parties position themselves for control of the affected seats in the Rivers State Assembly.
