Gunmen believed to be bandits have killed the Commander of the Community Protection Guard at a town in Zamfara State while returning from his farm.

The bandits laid and ambush and killed Lauwali Dan Tambai, commander of Zamfara Community Protection Guard (ZCPG) in Goran Namaye, Maradun Local Government Area of the state, along the road that leads to the farm on Sunday afternoon.

A source in the state told Impact Nigeria News Online on Monday morning that the commander, described as a brave community defender who risked his life to protect civilians and property amid worsening insecurity, was surrounded by the marauders during the ambush, as they eventually shot him dead.

The source said it seems that the bandits at some communities in the state are now targetting individuals known to be influential and those who are popular in their localities.

Just on Saturday afternoon, Sheikh Abdullahi Maharazu Mafara, a prominent cleric, former local government chairman and former Commissioner for Religious Affairs in the state, narrowly escaped death when bandits opened fire on his vehicle while travelling from Talata Mafara to Gusau for a political meeting in the state.

Though he escaped death, he sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and he is currently on admission at a hospital in Gusau, the state capital.

Zamfara State has always been in the news over the activities of bandits and terrorists who unleash mayhem on residents of various parts of the state, killing some and abducting others.

While the marauders attack residents for hours unchallenged, both the state government and security agencies seem to be looking the other way.
