In a commendable effort to combat the unlawful trafficking of infants, the Delta State Police Command has apprehended three individuals allegedly involved in a baby trafficking scheme within the state.
In a video statement released by Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, on Monday, he reassured the public that the state’s law enforcement agencies are heightening their efforts to dismantle and suppress any illicit child trafficking rings operating within their jurisdiction.
One of the suspects, the child’s mother, allegedly handed over her newborn to an unidentified woman, who later sold the baby for ₦3.5 million but only gave the mother ₦600,000.
Captioning the video, Edafe wrote: “The girl with long hair got pregnant, and people took care of her, but after some time, they saw her without the pregnancy, what happened to your baby, she said a woman helped her sell the child and gave her 600k.”
The seller, when asked about how they managed to sell the infant, explained,” I sold the baby for N3.5 million. I gave the mother N600,00, the N30,000 was the money she took from me earlier on. I gave her N600,000 for her business, the remaining money is in my account, I didn’t touch it. She said she didn’t want to breastfeed, that she didn’t need the relationship.”
The buyer, in response to the allegations, stated that,” I am from Ika, there’s a lady in my area, I told her I wanted to adopt a child in a legit way. I paid the seller N5 million. She told me that the document is in process, that she’ll bring it.”
