The driver of a vehicle loaded with hard drugs abandoned it and fled into the nearby bush when soldiers flagged him down in order to conduct stop and search on the vehicle.
The Nigerian Army announced the development on its Facebook page on Wednesday morning, saying the incident occurred on October 14 at a road in Anguwan Malama, Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
It was gathered that troops of the Operation WHIRL STROKE conducted the stop and search at the checkpoint in Akwanga, flagging down the driver of the Toyota Solara car.
However, according to the Nigerian Army, on sighting the soldiers, the man jumped out of the car and fled into the nearby bush, thereby abandoning it on the road.
The soldiers were said to have pursued him but the man succeeded in evading arrest while a manhunt had been launched in order to track him down.
The Nigerian Army wrote: “A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of several bags of substances suspected to be marijuana. The vehicle and recovered exhibits are currently in military custody for further investigation and subsequent handover to relevant authorities.”
The Nigerian Army as well as the Nigeria Police have been grappling with the activities of drug dealers and peddlers who supply substances to various criminal groups including bandits and terrorists. Some of them have been arrested and prosecuted.
