The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly uncovered an alleged plot by suspected bandits to abduct schoolchildren in parts of Edo State, particularly within the Edo North Senatorial District, according to an intelligence memo dated June 5, 2026.

The memo, which has circulated online, warned security agencies and relevant authorities of a potential threat to schools in the state following intelligence reportedly obtained from intercepted communications between two suspected bandits identified as Bawa and Nuhu.

According to the document, the suspects allegedly discussed targeting schoolchildren after previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals were unsuccessful.

“Intelligence at the disposal of the command indicates plans by suspected bandits to kidnap school children in the State, particularly in Edo North senatorial district,” the memo stated.

The DSS further alleged that the suspects concluded that abducting schoolchildren could attract greater government attention and increase the likelihood of securing substantial ransom payments.

As part of efforts to prevent the alleged plot, the security agency disclosed that a 25-year-old suspect, identified as Emmanuel Momidu, was arrested while allegedly conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School in the Makeke Community of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

Following the development, the DSS advised authorities to strengthen security around schools across Edo State, particularly in communities considered vulnerable within Edo North.

The agency recommended the deployment of security personnel to schools and surrounding areas in collaboration with the Edo State Security Corps, local vigilante groups, hunters and other community-based security outfits.

It also called for increased patrols, surveillance operations and intelligence-gathering activities in locations identified as potential targets.

The intelligence report has renewed concerns over the safety of students and educational institutions amid persistent security challenges and recurring incidents of school kidnappings in parts of Nigeria.

The warning comes weeks after the reported abduction of pupils and teachers from a school in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, an incident that sparked public concern and renewed calls for improved security measures around schools, particularly in rural communities.

For several years, criminal groups have targeted educational institutions in various parts of the country, carrying out mass abductions and demanding ransom payments for the release of students and staff.

Security agencies have continued to emphasize the need for proactive intelligence gathering and community-based security measures to prevent such attacks and safeguard vulnerable institutions.
