For Nigeria to have a bright and comfortable future, the socio-economic foundation of the country is important. It is on this basis that future of any nation rests. However, more importantly are the norms, values and morals that the society releases to the younger generation.
We agree that good roads, viable economy and good healthcare system make life meaning and worth living, yet, a society that priotises these things over the social and cultural wellbeing of the young ones has successfully built a house of cards that would fall apart with any little touch.
As a media organization, we are gravely concerned that the fabrics of our society and what Africans are known for are being eaten up due to negligence. Unfortunately the supposed custodians of the values that we are expected to hold in high regards are in the vanguard of immoral acts.
IMPACT NEWS is worried about this trend. A classical case happened in Osun State. A father along with his son and hoodlums stormed the school premises his son attends to beat up the principal of the school. Adeyeni Adejuwon, an SS3 student and his father were alleged to have stormed the Oduduwa Secondary School, Ile-Ife, and beat up the principal, Sanusi Ademola.
The principal had chastened the student by correcting him to dress properly and the student reported to his father who was totally uncomfortable with the principal’s action. The student, his father and some hoodlums eventually went straight to the principal’s office where they launched a punch on Ademola’s face. They were said to have tore the principal’s cloth and beaten him to a stupor.
According to investigators, while carrying out the assault on the school principal, a car key, an office key and a purse containing a cash sum of N50,000 was stolen from the office. The father and his son were eventually arrested after the assaulted principal reported the matter to the Police. The father and son were later arraigned.
Parents are expected to be the initial role-model to their children but it is rater disturbing that while the father failed in his duty he brutally descended on the principal who tried to step in the space to fill the moral gap. A trend like this should not be encouraged if the country intends to have a brighter future.
There is definitely a correlation between the insecurity experienced in some parts of the country, especially in the north and the lack of home training. We commend the prompt response of the Nigeria Police that arraigned the culprit in a court of law. We also commend the state government for appropriate steps that have also been taken. These are indications that government bodies still relate with the importance of moral investments on the younger generation.
Patents most endeavor to lay solid foundation of moral upbringing and training for their children, it would save the country more of resources that is pumped in securing the nation and improve our investment portfolio.
