Eight persons comprising four men and four women who said they were members of a group they described as ‘Democratic Republic of the Yoruba,’ caused crisis in some parts of the Sango-Ota area of Ogun State and launched an attack on police officers have been arrested by men of the state police command.
They were arrested on Christmas Day and were accused of breach of public peace, unlawful assembly, obstruction of traffic and serious assault on police officers who attempted to stop them.
The names of those arrested were given as Adewale Sosanya, aged 48; Opeyemi Oladotun, aged 31; Zara Gabriel, aged 22; Ajoke Gabriel, aged 19; Adewale Adebonojo, aged 48; Yusuf Tanimowo, aged 40; Olurotimi Ademola, aged 52; and Toyin Gabriel, aged 40.
It was gathered that on Christmas Day, at Temidire Junction and Under-Bridge, Sango-Ota, the persons, agitating under the aegis of ‘Democratic Republic of the Yoruba’ barricaded roads, set bonfires, disrupted flow of traffic, and attacked police officers deployed to maintain law and order.
The officers were said to have called for reinforcement and following this, the command sent drafter some police operatives to the locations, successfully dispersed the group and arrested the eight persons.
The state police command in a statement issued on Friday, December 26, said exhibits recovered from them included a Toyota Dyna vehicle used to convey them, two broadcast pods, a carton containing flags, shirts bearing inscriptions of their agitation, and banners displaying their messages and manifesto.
They were said to have given more useful information about their agitating activities and they would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigation.
