The Ekiti State Police Command has reacted to a viral video showing one of its officers behaving erratically while dressed in camouflage uniform, with suspicions that he may have been under the influence of illicit substances.
The trending video captured some residents attempting to calm and restrain the officer, who appeared aggressive and unstable in his conduct.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the command, SP Sunday Abutu, said the police immediately launched an internal response after the video surfaced online.
According to him, the officer was identified, arrested and taken into custody.
“The Police Sergeant, who is currently serving
at Ikole-Ekiti Division Police Headquarters, is in custody, though now in a stable condition, and will be made to undergo disciplinary procedure,” Abutu stated.
He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, had ordered that the officer undergo psychological and medical evaluation ahead of disciplinary action.
The police spokesperson stressed that the conduct displayed in the video does not reflect the standards and discipline of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Commissioner of Police unequivocally stated that the behaviour portrayed by the Policeman in the video does not depict the standard discipline of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement added.
