#EndSARS protests: Benin prisons under attack, Soldiers take over key protest points in Abuja

The wall of headquarters of the Nigeria Correctional Centre (Nigeria prisons in Benin) has been penetrated by protesters gathering around Kings Square in Benin City, the capital city of Edo State.

Eyes witnesses said the protesters gained entrance into the prison through the fence and thereafter freed inmates in the prisons.

In Abuja the Nigerian soldiers on Monday morning took over key locations in the Federal Capital Territory to prevent the #EndSARS protesters from converging.

However, the Ibadan end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Oyo State on Monday morning was blocked by angry Nigerians who are calling for a total ban of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The blockage of the expressway which links Ibadan and other parts of the country is in continuation of a nationwide call for the ban of SARS.

The action of the protesters who are demanding for a total police reform has rendered commuters stranded on the expressway.

SARS, as the unit is popularly known, has been accused of crimes including extrajudicial killing, kidnapping and extortion.

Thousands of young Nigerians have taken to the streets in major cities including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu and Ibadan, to press home their demands.

The Nigerian Army said last week that it was loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari and the country, and that it would defend the country’s democracy.

It issued a stern warning to people it termed “subversive elements”. Many critics believed the army’s statement was targeted at #EndSARS protesters.
