The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly impersonating a police officer and extorting members of the public.
The suspect, identified as Nasiru Shitu of Kofar Waika Quarters, Kano, was apprehended on Sunday, September 21, 2025, around 5 p.m. at Kofar Dawanau. Police said the arrest followed reports of repeated extortion in the area by individuals posing as security personnel.
Shitu was dressed in what appeared to be a police uniform at the time of his arrest. A preliminary investigation revealed that he is neither a serving police officer nor a member of the Police Special Constabulary. According to the police, he had been masquerading as an officer to intimidate and exploit unsuspecting residents.
Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, said the suspect will face prosecution once investigations are completed. Detectives are also working to establish the scope of his alleged activities and whether he had accomplices.
“The suspect will be charged to court. Further investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of his operations and any collaborators,” Kiyawa said.

Commissioner of Police CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori commended officers for the arrest and assured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property. He urged members of the public to assist with information, particularly victims who may have been extorted by the suspect.
Residents can reach the police through the emergency line 07038188127.
“The Kano State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of all residents. We will continue to take proactive measures to ensure that those who engage in such criminal activities are brought to justice,” Bakori said.
The command also warned against impersonation of security personnel, describing it as a criminal act that erodes public trust. Residents were advised to remain vigilant, verify the identities of security operatives, and report suspicious activities promptly.
