The family of a man who developed a mental problem in Togo and found his way to Nigeria has given details of how they searched everywhere for him in the country before they got information that he had been found in Nigeria.
The man, whose name was given simply as Michael, was among several mentally challenged persons rescued from the streets in Benin City, the Edo State capital, during a special operation organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
The ministry embarked on the exercise in order to remove vulnerable persons roaming the streets and provide them with comprehensive medical care, rehabilitation and psychosocial support aimed at restoring their mental health and facilitating their reintegration into society.
While handing him over to his younger brother who travelled from Togo to Benin City, an official of the ministry said on Thursday, July 30, that the rehabilitation and reunion reflected the ministry’s commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and restoring hope to individuals experiencing mental health challenges.
Michael’s brother who travelled after learning of his brother’s situation in Nigeria, disclosed that the family had searched tirelessly for him in their country for a long time, not knowing that he had found his way to Nigeria.
He added that it was in the course of searching for him that the family eventually received information that he had been found and was undergoing rehabilitation in Edo State.
Describing the reunion as a dream come true, the brother commended the state government for its humanitarian intervention and prayed for God’s continued blessings on all those who contributed to his brother’s recovery.
