A federal university in the Northern part of Nigeria, the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, has said it has uncovered some undergraduates who never did Continuous Assessment (CA) tests and who never wrote examinations getting what it called “concessional pass.”
It therefore warned lecturers in the institution that henceforth, students must score a minimum of 25% before he or she could be given the “concessional pass.”
The university authorities disclosed these in a circular issued by Bappa Shamsudeen on behalf of the Registrar of the institution and which was copied to the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Deans of faculties and others.
According to the circular, the university authorities observed that some students do not attend lectures, deliberately refusing to write Continuous Assessment tests and in some cases, do not sit for examinations under the assumption that they will automatically be granted concessional pass degrees.
As a result of this, the university said the Senate, the highest academic body of the institution, at its extraordinary meeting held on December 23, approved 25 marks as the minimum obtainable mark for the award of concessional pass in the institution.
The Senate said this was aimed at “ensuring uniformity across all facilities and departments as the behaviour of the students contravenes Senate guidelines and undermines academic standards.”
The university wrote: “Henceforth, students should clearly note that effective from 2025/26 academic session, only those who score 25 marks and above will be considered for concessional pass.”
