The Federal Government has committed ₦80 billion to the renovation of over 100 Unity Schools across Nigeria, in a bold effort to upgrade aging infrastructure and restore the standard of federal colleges.
Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, announced the initiative during an unannounced inspection of Federal Government College (FGC), Kano, where she assessed facilities and interacted with staff and students. The visit forms part of a nationwide evaluation drive focused on infrastructure, school leadership, and the overall learning environment.
“We are committed to restoring the standard of Unity Schools through massive infrastructural upgrades and enhanced teacher capacity,” Prof. Ahmad stated, reaffirming the government’s dedication to creating a modern, inclusive, and conducive academic atmosphere.
She highlighted the historic role of Unity Schools in promoting national integration, educational equity, and academic excellence, noting that the current investment seeks to uphold the founding ideals of these institutions.
Prof. Ahmad also revealed that the Ministry is working on a digital learning and training platform to offer continuous professional development for teachers. This initiative will give educators 24/7 access to teaching materials, training modules, and development tools, regardless of location—a move aimed at improving teaching quality and student outcomes.
“This innovation will empower teachers and ultimately improve the quality of instruction students receive in Unity Schools,” she added.
During her visit to Federal Government Girls’ College, Kazaure, the Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to equitable distribution of resources among all Unity Schools under the renovation program.
The ₦80 billion intervention will focus on the rehabilitation of classrooms, science laboratories, dormitories, libraries, and ICT centers, addressing long-standing complaints over dilapidated structures and overcrowded facilities.
Education stakeholders have widely welcomed the move, describing it as a much-needed intervention that could significantly improve the learning experience for thousands of students and advance the broader goal of revitalizing public education.
The Unity Schools upgrade is part of the administration’s larger agenda to strengthen national cohesion and educational quality through sustained investment in public schools.
