Some Fulani youths were said to have killed five police officers and injured two others when they laid an ambush for the patrol team who came to resolve a farmer-herder clash at a community in Bauchi State.
The state police command announced the sad development in a statement on Sunday night, saying the incident occurred in Sabon Sara Village, Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
It however said some of the Fulani youths were also killed during a gun duel that followed the ambush.
According to reports, on Saturday, November 22, around 12:40 p.m., a team of personnel comprising Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Mobile Police Force, Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU) and State Intelligence Department (SID) were ambushed by Fulani youths while on visibility policing patrol to prevent, mitigate and manage farmer-herder conflict within and around the village
During the ambush, the youths killed the five officers whose names were given as DSP Ahmad Muhammad, ASP Mustapha Muhammad, Inspector Amarhel Yunusa, Inspector Idris Ahmed and Corporal Isah Muazu, while two other officers, Inspector Isah Musa and Inspector Yusuf Gambo, sustained various degrees of injuries.
The command wrote: “Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) led a team of reinforcements to the scene, rescued and evacuated both the injured and deceased personnel to the general hospital in Darazo for medical treatment, and deposited the remains at the morgue.”
The command added that intense efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the perpetrators of the heinous act within and around the area.
