Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has celebrated her milestone as her movie, ‘Behind The Scenes,’ grosses over N2 billion at the box office, reportedly making her Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker of all time.
The movie’s milestone was announced on Monday, January 12, by the film’s distributor, FilmOne Entertainment.
The movie was reported as the first in West Africa to cross over two billion naira at the box office, the Nollywood title of all time in Africa, in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and the first filmmaker to reportedly rank number one at the box office in Africa for three consecutive years.
“Behind the Scenes has officially BROKEN and SHATTERED records, hitting over 2 BILLION at the box office and becoming the first Nollywood film in Africa to cross the ₦2 billion mark.
“This is also the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time in Africa, the UK, and Ireland, and makes @funkejenifaakindele, the first filmmaker to rank #1 at the box office in Africa for three consecutive years, West Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker, writer, director, and producer of all time,” FilmOne announced.
In a post on her official X account on Monday evening to celebrate the milestone, Akindele thanked God for the success of the movie, while reminiscing on her previous high-grossing movies.
She wrote: “Records are milestones, not the mission. From A Tribe Called Judah grossing 1B to Behind The Scenes crossing 2B and still counting, this is God in motion. And I’m most grateful to my maker and return all the glory to him.
“The lesson remains unchanged: serve the story, respect the audience, refine the craft, and let the work earn its applause.”
The filmmaker currently holds the record for the top three highest-grossing Nollywood movies with ‘Behind The Scenes,’ released in 2025, grossing N2,103,039,706 and still counting. ‘Everybody Loves Jenifer,’ released in 2024, grossed N1,882,553,548, and ‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ released in 2023, grossed N1,408,227,541.
‘Behind The Scene’ was directed by Funke Akindele alongside Tunde Olaoye, and starred an ensemble of cast including Funke Akindele, Scarlet Gomez, Uzor Arukwe, Destiny Etiko, Ini Dima Okojie, Mr Macaroni, Tobi Bakre, Iyabo Ojo, Uche Montana, Ibrahim Chatta, and Victoria Adeyele.
The movie centres on Aderonke “Ronky Fella” Faniran, a successful real estate entrepreneur whose generosity and personal decisions begin to take a toll on her private life.
The latest box office feat further cements Akindele’s status as one of Nollywood’s most commercially successful and influential filmmakers.
