A member of the Ghana Drunkards Association has taken his own life by hanging at Ablekuma Olebu in the Anyaa Sowutuom area of the Greater Accra Region, GhanaWeb, one of the country’s online platforms, reported on Wednesday, December 3.
The Ghana Drunkards Association is a well-known informal social group in the country and it claims to have about 6.6 million members across the country who include both casual and regular drinkers as well as bar owners and beverage sellers.
President of the association, Moses Drybone, who announced the sad incident on Wednesday, said the deceased, whose name was not disclosed, had recently expressed challenges in his marriage. He was said to have reportedly left his home, telling friends he needed peace away from his wife’s behaviour.
The man was not seen for several days until his body was discovered in his room, hanging from the ceiling with a rope fastened around his neck, shortly after he returned home.
Police in the area were said to have retrieved his decomposed body and conveyed it to the morgue as investigations have commenced to unravel the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
Meanwhile, the association has urged all members to always seek help during difficult times.
“This member of the association committed suicide last weekend due to depression. We urge all members to open up to each other whenever they have problems. We are here to support one another. Please, suicide is never an option,” the association stated.
