Heirs Insurance Group has met the National Insurance Commission’s recapitalisation requirements, positioning the company to underwrite larger and more complex risks as Nigeria’s insurance industry enters a new phase of stronger capitalisation.

The insurance group, in  release, announced that both Heirs General Insurance and Heirs Life Assurance were included on the National Insurance Commission’s list of insurance companies that satisfied the revised minimum capital requirements following the conclusion of the industry’s recapitalisation programme.

The company said the exercise was expected to reshape Nigeria’s insurance landscape by creating stronger operators with the financial capacity to support large-scale investments, infrastructure development and broader economic growth.

According to the firm, the successful recapitalisation comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to build a $1tn economy, with the reforms expected to boost investor confidence by strengthening insurers’ financial resilience, governance standards and underwriting capacity.

It stated that the enhanced capital base would significantly expand its ability to retain bigger risks, participate in more sophisticated transactions, forge strategic partnerships with multinational organisations and provide risk protection for local and international investors seeking opportunities in Nigeria.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Life Assurance, Niyi Onifade, said the recapitalisation represented a defining moment for both the company and the insurance industry.

He said, “This is a significant transformation point for us at Heirs Insurance Group and Nigeria’s insurance industry as a whole. The recapitalisation reforms open up the industry for more competition and creates opportunities to support the scale of investments Nigeria requires.”

Onifade added that the company was well positioned to maximise the opportunities created by the reforms through innovation and strategic collaboration.

He said, “We are ready to take advantage of the numerous opportunities this brings and commit to deepening financial inclusion, strengthening strategic partnerships and redefining insurance through technology and customer-centric innovation, as we have always done.”

According to the statement, the group said it was entering the new phase from a position of strength, having recorded rapid growth over the past five years through technology-driven operations, simplified customer experience and investments in digital platforms.

It recalled that Heirs Life Assurance and Heirs General Insurance were recently recognised among the Financial Times’ Fastest Growing Companies in Africa, while the group has continued to strengthen its position as Nigeria’s leading digital insurance brand through investments in digital distribution and technology-enabled service delivery.

The company also highlighted its innovation drive, including the launch of Prince AI, described as Nigeria’s first multilingual generative artificial intelligence insurance assistant, designed to enable customers to purchase insurance policies, obtain information and access support in multiple local and international languages.

It added that its digital Experience Centres form part of a broader strategy to simplify insurance processes and expand access to underserved customers across the country.

Heirs Insurance Group, the insurance subsidiary of Heirs Holdings, comprises Heirs General Insurance Limited, Heirs Life Assurance Limited and Heirs Insurance Brokers. The group said it would leverage its strengthened capital base, expanding retail footprint and omnichannel digital presence to deepen financial inclusion and accelerate insurance penetration across Nigeria.
