The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, says his endorsement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election “means a great deal.”
In a post shared on his X handle on Monday, April 27, Hamzat expressed his appreciation for the governor’s support.
He noted that the governor’s endorsement was deeply valued and described it as a strong vote of confidence in his leadership capacity.
Hamzat further added that both of them had worked closely in steering Lagos affairs over the years, stressing that he does not take the governorship endorsement lightly.
“Today, I am honoured by the endorsement of my Governor, my brother and my friend, HE Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“His trust means a great deal to me. We’ve worked side by side in the service of Lagos State, and I don’t take this vote of confidence lightly,” he wrote.
The Deputy Governor further pledged continuity in governance and commitment to service delivery if given the opportunity to lead the state.
“I remain committed to building on the progress we’ve made together, and look forward to serving Lagosians with integrity, focus and a clear sense of purpose,” he added.
Recall that Sanwo-Olu publicly backed his deputy to succeed him on Monday, April 27, during a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat reportedly declared his intention to contest the governorship seat.
Sanwo-Olu said the decision followed a consensus among political stakeholders present at the meeting, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council.
He described Hamzat as “fit and well-prepared” for the role, adding that he has worked with him at the highest level of trust and governance over the past years.
The governor added in a tweet on his X handle that Hamzat’s understanding of governance and the socio-economic development of the state makes him the “best man for the job.”
Sanwo-Olu wrote, “Today, I received my Deputy, @drobafemihamzat, as he formally shared his intention to run for Governor of Lagos State.
“We have worked closely for over 21 years and I know his strength, his capabilities and his steady commitment to the people of Lagos.
“Femi’s understanding of governance and the socio-economic development of the state, as nurtured by our leader, HE President Bola Tinubu, makes him, undoubtedly, the best man for the job.
“Lagos is too important to be left for experimenting. I, therefore, have no doubt that with his values, he will continue to work tirelessly to make our state greater.”
