What began as a night of national celebration ended in heartbreaking tragedy after a 13-year-old boy lost his life when a public fountain collapsed during jubilant celebrations of Spain’s FIFA World Cup victory.
The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, July 20, 2026, in the western Spanish town of Ciudad Rodrigo, shortly after Spain defeated Argentina to lift the World Cup trophy.
Emergency services said distress calls began arriving shortly after 12:30 a.m. local time, reporting that a fountain had collapsed beneath a crowd of jubilant fans who had climbed onto the structure in celebration. Authorities confirmed the death of the teenager, while several others sustained injuries, including another young person.
“A few minutes after 12:30 a.m. local time, rescue services received calls over a fountain collapsing on numerous people,” emergency officials said in a statement posted on X.
The Ciudad Rodrigo municipal government expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing it as a heartbreaking turn of events that transformed a moment of national joy into one of grief.
“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team in the football World Cup turned into tragedy,” the municipality said in a statement.
“The City Hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sadness and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the 13-year-old boy.”
Officials added that several others were injured, although the full extent of the casualties had not been released at the time of reporting.
Spain’s World Cup victory sparked jubilant celebrations across the country, with thousands of supporters filling streets, squares and public landmarks, waving flags, singing and rejoicing after the nation’s long-awaited triumph.
