Kano State politics witnessed a significant development on Tuesday as former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso met with the state chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Hussaini Mairiga, to resolve lingering disputes within the party.
The meeting, confirmed by Mairiga in an interview with journalists, involved key stakeholders at the state level and aimed at addressing disagreements over party leadership and structure in Kano.
Following the discussions, Mairiga announced that the crisis had been amicably resolved, affirming Kwankwaso’s leadership role within the state chapter of the party. “We had a fruitful discussion with Sen. Kwankwaso and other critical stakeholders of our great party. All lingering issues have been amicably resolved in the interest of unity and progress,” he said. He urged party members to remain calm and committed to the ideals of the NDC, emphasizing that unity was essential for achieving success in upcoming elections.
The resolution comes after days of tension in the Kano NDC following Kwankwaso’s defection alongside presidential candidate Peter Obi, which sparked concerns over control of the party structure. The situation was further complicated by earlier disagreements over leadership integration, with both sides holding separate meetings that failed to produce a consensus. Allegations of a suspended state congress also contributed to uncertainty among party members regarding potential restructuring of the leadership.
Analysts say the agreement signals a fresh start for the NDC in Kano, strengthening the party’s internal cohesion ahead of future elections. By officially recognizing Kwankwaso as the state leader, the party aims to consolidate support and maintain stability while fostering collaboration between long-standing executives and new entrants.
