The Lagos State government on Saturday, May 2, said it will begin serious enforcement with possible prosecution regarding motorists who cover the number plates of their vehicles on the roads in the state.
It is not uncommon to see vehicles owned by individuals on major roads in the state with covered number plates contrary to rules and regulations guiding vehicular movement.
The Commissioner for Transportation in the state, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced the planned enforcement on Saturday during a meeting with residents and stakeholders in the Lekki area of the state to address growing concerns over traffic violations and public safety.
At the meeting, the commissioner said motorists concealing number plates would face tougher enforcement and possible arrest and prosecution, adding that discussions had already begun with police authorities in the area.
He said: “Concealing number plates creates security concerns and weakens accountability on our roads. Safety is not negotiable, and every resident deserves adequate protection.”
According to him, enforcement would be intelligence-driven and supported by technology, while also disclosing that the state remained committed to restoring order on major traffic corridors.
Osiyemi also used the opportunity of the meeting to announce progress on the proposed Green Line rail project, describing the rail initiative as critical to Lekki’s transportation future.
“The Green Line will change mobility patterns and reduce pressure on roads,” he said, adding that work on complementary transport systems was advancing.
On traffic control, he said the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) had expanded operations in Lekki, noting that the agency’s night patrol teams were already active.
“Night enforcement has improved monitoring and response in the corridor,” he said.
He condemned excessive speeding and one-way driving that are very common among motorists in the Lekki corridor, saying that these behaviours endanger lives and would not be acdcepted by the government.
