Lagos to Enforce Strict Penalties for Environmental Offences from July 1
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to strictly enforce penalties for environmental offences, including illegal dumping of refuse and littering, starting July 1, 2025. Offenders risk a fine of ₦250,000 or a three-month jail term.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the new enforcement drive in a statement posted on his X handle on Wednesday, June 4. He warned that Lagos would no longer tolerate environmental abuse, stressing that over 3,000 violators have already been arrested.
Wahab emphasized that the ban on single-use plastics would also take effect in full from July 1, with offenders facing stiff consequences. He reiterated that laws against open defecation, cart pushing, and illegal street trading remain in force.
“This is about saving our environment – for us and future generations,” he said, urging residents to celebrate the coming Sallah with cleanliness and responsibility.
He advised residents to bag their waste properly and hand it over to approved PSP operators, warning that dumping refuse in drains or roads contributes to flooding and public health hazards.
Wahab also cautioned developers against blocking drains with construction materials, stating such acts would lead to prosecution and sealing of properties.
