By Nchetachi Chukwuajah, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced a monthly N10,000 salary boost for all workers in the state to ease the cost of transportation following a hike in fuel price. This initiative is widely referred to as Salary Boost as Makinde Responds to Fuel Hike.

Makinde said the N10,000 top-up would be for an initial period of three months, beginning from April, with a possible extension if the fuel price situation persists. Furthermore, Salary Boost as Makinde Responds to Fuel Hike intends to help workers manage increased expenses.

He stated this on Monday, March 23, during the supervision of the YEAP-SAFER support disbursement and stakeholder engagement programme, held in partnership with First City Monument Bank (FCMB) and Mastercard at Fashola Agribusiness Hub, Oyo.

The governor said the intervention is part of the state government’s broader response to prevailing economic pressures, particularly the rising cost of transportation, which has continued to impact workers’ productivity and welfare. In fact, Salary Boost as Makinde Responds to Fuel Hike is seen as a positive step toward supporting employees.

According to him, the measure is designed to cushion the financial burden on civil servants while ensuring uninterrupted service delivery across ministries, departments, and agencies.

He said, “I am happy to announce that all workers in Oyo State and the local government starting from April, at least for the first three months, will be given N10,000 in addition to their monthly salary as petrol/transportation support. All workers, everybody. It is a flat rate. Maybe it would be extended.

“Those who are not working with the Oyo State government may also benefit from it. We will handle it properly to ensure it is all-inclusive.

“As I approach the end of my administration, one of the things I’m particularly focused on is ensuring continuity.

“This support is a direct response to the realities our workers are facing. We understand that transportation costs have gone up significantly, and as a government, we must act to ease that burden.”

He added that the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to worker-friendly policies and sustainable economic relief programmes under the Oyo State government’s SAfER framework. Notably, Salary Boost as Makinde Responds to Fuel Hike exemplifies the government’s responsive leadership.

The event also featured the disbursement of funds to beneficiaries under the Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness Project (YEAP) and other targeted support schemes, aimed at stimulating economic activities and strengthening livelihoods across the state.
