A man who wanted to deliver 180 explosive materials to terrorists in Katsina State from his place in Zamfara State has been arrested by men of the Nigerian Army while on the journey.
The man, Sani Umar, aged 57 years, was arrested by troops of Sector Two of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, following intelligence reports gathered about his mission.
It was gathered that on Friday, August 14, the troops intercepted the man along the road and during a search on his vehicle, they recovered 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives.
When questioned, he was said to have told the soldiers that the materials were being transported from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State for delivery to terrorist elements operating in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.
“The suspect, vehicle and recovered explosives are currently in custody for further investigation,” the Nigerian Army said in a statement on Saturday, August 15.
In another development and on the same day, the troops of conducting an offensive clearance operation in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area, made contact with terrorists around Garin Kaso and engaged them in a fierce firefight.
Two terrorists were confirmed killed during the initial encounter, while troops recovered two rifles, two magazines, nine rounds of ammunition and two motorcycles.
As the operation progressed, another group of terrorists attempted to ambush the troops from concealed positions. The troops responded decisively and successfully fought through the ambush, inflicting further casualties on the terrorists and forcing the surviving elements to flee.
