A man who was arrested by men of the Bauchi State Police Command after he stabbed a commercial motorcycle rider to death and took away his bike has told the operatives that he wanted to use the money made from the sale to marry a third wife.
The state police command announced this on its Facebook page on Friday evening, saying the man, Mamuda Zakari Yau, stabbed the Okada rider, Basiru Mohammed, with a knife.
According to the command, a distress call was received on Thursday night which indicated that Zakari Yau, a 30-year-old petty trader, attacked Basiru Mohammed, a 25-year-old commercial motorcyclist from Zango with a knife in order to steal the man’s motorcycle.
It was gathered that after he was stabbed, the victim was able to call for help, prompting nearby residents to respond swiftly. Some individuals were said to have pursued the man, causing him to abandon the motorcycle and flee into the bush.
However, after receiving the report of the incident, a team of detectives from ‘E’ Division of the command in Yelwa went to the scene where they rushed the Okada rider to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) where he was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.
The police thereafter launched a manhunt for the man and after some days, he was arrested.
The command wrote: “During his interrogation, he confessed to the crime, attributing his action to financial difficulties linked to his intention to marry a third wife. He said he deceitfully lured the motorcyclist and used a knife to stab him to death.”
He was said to have given more useful information to the police operatives and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). He is expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
