The Nigerian military has confirmed that several terrorists were killed during a targeted airstrike on August 4 while attending a wedding ceremony in Yankuzo Ward, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to Captain David Adewusi, spokesperson for the Joint Task Force Operation Fasin Yamma (OPFY), the precision strike was carried out by the Air Component of the force. The operation targeted the foot of Asola Hills, based on intelligence reports about terrorist activities in parts of Zamfara and neighboring Katsina State, particularly around the Faskari and Kankara areas.
Adewusi said the terrorists had gathered for a wedding, offering the military a rare opportunity to strike. The operation resulted in the death of many terrorists, while several others were injured.
On August 5, ground troops from 1 Brigade under Sector 2 of OPFY launched a follow-up operation to pursue surviving terrorists believed to have fled to Yankuzo Village for treatment. During the mission, troops were ambushed but successfully repelled the attack.
In the course of the follow-up operation, four individuals from Kunchin Kalgo Village, also in Tsafe LGA, were critically injured and are suspected of collaborating with the terrorists. Their involvement is under investigation.
Captain Adewusi reiterated the military’s commitment to restoring peace in Zamfara and across the wider North West region, which has long been affected by terrorism, armed banditry, and community violence.
The military’s actions are part of a broader strategy that includes intelligence-led airstrikes and ground operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks. This latest strike reflects a growing focus on precision attacks and coordinated responses to disrupt and degrade armed groups operating in rural areas.
“Operation Fasin Yamma remains committed to restoring peace and security across Zamfara and the wider North West region,” Adewusi stated.
The airstrike underscores the Nigerian military’s ongoing shift toward proactive and intelligence-driven warfare in tackling insecurity in volatile regions.
