The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cracked down a major counterfeit rice operation in Nasarawa State and Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, seizing over 1,600 bags of fake rice with an estimated market value of ₦5 billion.

The agency, in a statement at weekend, disclosed that the crackdown targeted eight shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa. The facility was allegedly involved in the production and distribution of fake rice disguised as popular brands.

Following directives from NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, enforcement teams expanded their operation to Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja. The raids uncovered counterfeit rice packaged in branded bags, including widely recognized names like Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo.

NAFDAC revealed that the counterfeiters used empty branded bags to package the fake rice, deceiving unsuspecting consumers.

The operation underscores NAFDAC’s commitment to ensuring food safety and protecting Nigerian consumers. Investigations are ongoing, and the agency has vowed to bring the culprits to justice.
