Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has credited his teammates for lifting his spirits after a series of missed chances during Nigeria’s 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon in the semifinal of the CAF World Cup playoffs on Thursday.
Osimhen, widely expected to be Nigeria’s difference-maker at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium, started brightly and looked dangerous from kickoff. The Galatasaray forward had several half-chances in the first half but failed to convert, and his struggles continued after the break.
Midway through the second half, Osimhen squandered a clear opportunity from close range. Moments later, Akor Adams spared Nigeria’s blushes by firing in the opener. But the advantage slipped away in stoppage time when Mario Lemina struck to draw Gabon level and send the match into extra time.
Osimhen had another golden chance to seal the game late in regulation after latching onto a pass from Chidera Ejuke, but he dragged his effort wide. The frustration on his face told the story, as many expected him to finish from that position.
The 25-year-old, however, recovered in emphatic fashion in extra time, scoring twice to steer Nigeria to a convincing win and into Sunday’s playoff clash with DR Congo.
Speaking after the match, Osimhen said the encouragement he received from teammates was crucial to his turnaround.
“When I missed the chance before full time, I asked my teammates if we were going to extra time or penalties,” Osimhen reportedly said. “They told me it was extra time, so I apologized and told them I was going to correct it. It’s important to have teammates who motivate you just as you motivate others. They brought me up, so kudos to them and to the whole team.”
Nigeria now faces a tougher test against a disciplined DR Congo side. A win would secure the Super Eagles a place in the Intercontinental World Cup playoffs scheduled for March next year. With fewer openings likely against the Leopards, Osimhen will be expected to be more clinical and make the most of any chances that fall his way.
