A Nigerian pilgrim participating in the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia has died during the movement of worshippers from Arafat to Muzdalifah, as millions of Muslims continue the annual spiritual exercise under harsh weather conditions.
The deceased, reportedly from Bauchi State, was said to have died in the early hours of Wednesday shortly after arriving at Muzdalifah from Arafat, one of the most significant stages of the Hajj pilgrimage.
Eyewitnesses said Saudi security personnel and emergency medical officials quickly evacuated the body from the area while pilgrims continued the overnight transition between the holy sites.
According to witnesses, the deceased was wheeled away by Saudi police officers and emergency responders, accompanied by two officials believed to be attached to the Bauchi State pilgrims contingent.
Although the identity of the pilgrim had yet to be officially confirmed at the time of filing this report, sources familiar with the incident said the victim was part of the Nigerian contingent participating in this year’s Hajj exercise.
The exact cause of death also remained unclear, as neither Saudi authorities nor Nigerian Hajj officials had issued any formal statement or medical report regarding the incident.
The death occurred during one of the most physically demanding phases of the pilgrimage, which involves the mass movement of pilgrims between Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina, often under extreme heat and overcrowded conditions.
Medical experts have consistently warned that elderly pilgrims and those with underlying health conditions remain vulnerable to exhaustion, dehydration and other complications during the Hajj rites.
Thousands of Nigerian pilgrims are currently participating in the 2026 Hajj under the supervision of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and various state Muslim pilgrims welfare boards.
Nigerian officials in Saudi Arabia have continued to provide medical, welfare and logistical support to pilgrims throughout the exercise, particularly during peak periods of movement between the holy sites.
Muzdalifah, located between Arafat and Mina, serves as a major stop during Hajj where pilgrims spend the night outdoors after leaving Arafat before proceeding to Mina for the symbolic stoning of the devil ritual.
Further details surrounding the incident were still being awaited from both Saudi authorities and Nigerian Hajj officials.
