Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone emergency abdominal surgery following an injury sustained during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Leicester City at the City Ground, the club confirmed in a statement released Tuesday morning.
Awoniyi, 27, suffered the injury after colliding with the goalpost in a failed attempt to convert a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga late in the match. Despite receiving extended on-field treatment, the Nigerian international attempted to continue playing, only to visibly struggle through the remaining minutes of added time.
It wasn’t until a medical evaluation on Monday that the full extent of the damage was realized, prompting immediate surgical intervention. The club did not detail the specific nature of the injury but clarified that the procedure was successful and not considered life-threatening.
“The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” read Forest’s official statement. “Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. Further updates will be provided when appropriate.”
