The Ogun State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Isese Day celebration.
The declaration was announced in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Kayode Akinmade.
According to the state government, the public holiday reflects the administration’s commitment to preserving and promoting Yoruba culture, heritage and traditional values.
Ogun State first declared August 20 a public holiday for the annual Isese Day celebration in 2023, following a resolution by the state House of Assembly which was subsequently approved by Governor Abiodun.
The government said the annual observance provides adherents of Yoruba traditional religion an opportunity to honour their ancestors, observe traditional rites and uphold the values embedded in their spiritual and cultural practices.
It added that the celebration also promotes a sense of community among traditional religion practitioners while allowing the wider public to appreciate and respect the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.
The state government further noted that the observance underscores its recognition of the role of culture and traditional institutions in preserving Ogun State’s identity and promoting social cohesion.
Residents were urged to celebrate peacefully and responsibly while respecting the beliefs, rights and practices of others.
The government wished adherents of traditional religion and residents of the state a peaceful and successful Isese Day celebration.
