A man with one leg who was using crutches has been arrested by men of the Kwara State Police Command after he was found with two AK-47 rifles, 42 rounds of ammunition as well as three magazines inside a commercial vehicle.
The man, whose name was given as Umaru Mohammed, aged 30 years, was arrested when police operatives carried out a stop-and-search along the Alapa-Okolowo axis of Ilorin, the state capital, where the firearms and ammunition were recovered from a bag found inside a commercial vehicle.
It was gathered that during his interrogation after his arrest, Umaru initially denied ownership of the bag containing the items, but later admitted to his involvement in conveying the recovered firearms and ammunition.
He also gave more information linking the weapons and ammunition to another member of his gun-running network, named Dan Yarubawa, who he said gave him the arms and ammunition for onward delivery to another individual known as Dahiru outside Kwara State.
He was said to have given more useful information to the operatives while efforts have been intensified to apprehend the other persons linked to the gunrunning network.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for more investigation and he is expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
