Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala has dismissed swirling rumours of her retirement from international football through a characteristically humorous post on social media.
On Monday evening, false reports began circulating online, claiming the six-time CAF Women’s Player of the Year had retired from the Nigerian national team. The misinformation stemmed from a Facebook post made by an account impersonating Oshoala.
However, it has now been confirmed that the prolific forward remains committed to the Super Falcons and has not retired. Sources close to the team say Oshoala is still part of the squad and will continue to represent Nigeria at least until the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
While Oshoala has yet to make an official statement or grant interviews regarding the rumour, she addressed the situation in her usual lighthearted style. On her social media, she shared a meme showing a man trying to wrestle a bull, a clear metaphor for frustration. She captioned it, “The day I catch that journalist… ogun kill am,” using Nigerian slang to express her irritation with the false report.
The post was widely interpreted as her way of both debunking the rumour and poking fun at the misinformation. Fans quickly rallied behind her in the comments, celebrating her continued presence in the national team.
Oshoala, who recently left Barcelona for Bay FC in the United States, remains one of Africa’s most iconic footballers and a core figure in Nigeria’s women’s team. Her contribution to the Super Falcons spans over a decade, with appearances at multiple World Cups and continental tournaments.
With this clarification, the focus now shifts back to football, as Oshoala and the Super Falcons continue preparations for the 2025 WAFCON and potential Olympic qualifiers.
