Over 100 projects embarked upon by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) have either been abandoned or become dilapidated at various institutions of higher learning across the country.
President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Babatunde Afeez Akinteye, said this on Wednesday, June 17.
TETFUND is a Federal Government intervention agency established by an act of parliament to manage, disburse and monitor education tax revenue allocated to public tertiary institutions across the country.
It was also set up to fix funding gaps in public tertiary institutions. It’s funded mainly by a three per cent education tax paid by companies registered in Nigeria.
TETFUND uses the money to carry out various projects in universities including building of lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, hostels, ICT centres in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, among other functions.
However, it was gathered that over 100 of such physical projects embarked upon by the body have been abandoned or have become dilapidated.
The NANS President stated that the discovery was made during the activities of a project assessment and monitoring committee he set up.
According to him, students across the country sent to him and the committee over 100 abandoned and dilapidated TETFUND projects in their campuses.
“Since I announced the independent TETFUND project assessment, verification and monitoring commitee, Nigerian students across the country have sent me over 100 abandoned and dilapidated TETFUND projects on their campuses.
“I have a strong commitment to follow up all these projects and know why they are abandoned and why new delivered projects under three years are getting dilapidated,” he said.
