Following the abduction of some students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, the Oyo State government on Friday, May 22, suspended all excursions, sporting activities, field trips and other students activities outside school premises.
The state government announced what it described as temporary suspension of the activities in a circular by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology addressed to Chairmen of TESCOM, SUBEB, Tutors General, principals of public and private secondary schools, head teachers of public and private primary schools, among other stakeholders.
According to the state government, the suspension became necessary in view of the recent security concerns and the need to safeguard the lives of students and members of staff in all schools in the state.
According to the circular, all school administrators are to suspend all activities outside school premises including excursions, sporting activities, field trips and others that require moving students outside school premises until further notice.
“School administrators are equally enjoined to keep students within school premises during school hours and should report any suspicious activity around school premises to law-enforcement agencies within their jurisdictions,” the statement read.
The government said the directive, which takes immediate effect, will be reviewed as soon as the security situation in the state improves.
