The driver of a Mack trailer has been arrested after he knocked down a police Inspector who was conducting stop and search duty at a road in Imo State.
The Inspector, Habila Mangai, lost his life while on lawful stop-and-search duty along the Owerri-Okigwe Road in the state last Friday, April 18.
The Inspector, who was attached to the Isiala Mbano Divisional Headquarters of the Imo State Police Command, was performing his duty at Amaraku when he was knocked down by the trailer driver whose name was given as Chisom Ajah.
However, it could not be ascertained the circumstances that led to him being knocked down by the driver.
After the knock down, he was rushed by his colleagues to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead by the medical personnel on duty. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
Following the incident, the driver was arrested and taken into custody while the vehicle had been handed over to the State Motor Traffic Department (SMTD), Owerri, for detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Nigeria Police Force assures the public that a thorough investigation has been instituted to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, and that justice will be duly served in accordance with the law,” the Nigeria Police Force said in a statement on Wednesday night.
