A man who doesn’t have any medical qualification and operates a clinic at a town in Kwara State has given details of how he had carried out many abortions in his clinic.
The man, Bello Maruf, aged 56 years, was arrested on Tuesday, October 13, by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for allegedly operating an unauthorised medical facility and performing abortions without recognised medical qualifications or a valid licence.
It was gathered that he was arrested after the last abortion he reportedly carried out went awry and when he was questioned about his qualifications to practice and run a clinic, he was found out to be unqualified.
Also, during preliminary investigations, he was said to have admitted to performing multiple abortions but failed to produce any certificate or licence authorising him to practice.
Medical instruments suspected to have been used in carrying out the abortions were also recovered during his arrest and he is expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
In another development, the command arrested a man, Victor Barry, aged 22 years, over the trafficking of a 17-year-old girl from Amoyo, Kwara State, to Mali under the pretext of securing employment for her in Senegal.
The case was reported by the victim’s mother at the NSCDC Amoyo Division on October 9, before being transferred to the State Headquarters in Ilorin.
Preliminary findings indicated that the suspect allegedly met the girl at his shop on October 5 when she visited to purchase noodles and subsequently offered her an opportunity to travel to Senegal for employment.
He reportedly took the girl to Lagos on October 7 and handed her over to an unidentified individual at Mile 2 for onward transportation abroad. He also informed NSCDC operatives that the girl arrived in Mali on October 12.
The man further alleged that an agent identified as Joy redirected the girl’s destination to Mali, contrary to their initial arrangement for her to travel to Senegal.
