Nigerians have been advised to reach out to the physically challenged and the less privileged in the society to alleviate their suffering and make life better for them.
This was the view of Ada Nnaneme, who led a committee of her friends to visit the Disabled Colony in Abuja on Wednesday to provide relieve materials to members of the community.
Nnaneme who operates Delish Africana, online restaurant in Abuja, described the living condition of the disabled in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and those living in the colony as pitiable, while urging other Nigerians to reach out to them.
“They needed to be reached out to. Their living conditions are quite poor. I know that God will touch the heart of kind hearted people,” she said.
To her, “giving gives you a high level of satisfaction. As bad as our situation may be at any point, our position is another person’s prayer point.
The FCT chairman of the disabled, Sadik Ibrahim who spoke on behalf of the community lamented that the colony suffers neglect from the FCT authority. He pointed out that in spite the physical challenge of the community dwellers, they lack primary healthcare center and other social amenities.
“The government only promise and we are yet to see them fulfill their promises. It is only NGOs and other well meaning Nigerians that have been of support to us. Government should give attention to our welfare, empower the disabled so that they will not resolve to begging.” He said.
The outreach provided free medical screening and testing for members of the community, while foodstuff, mosquito repellant cream, sanitary pads and many others were distributed to members of the community.
About 100 community dwellers of the colony benefited from free medical checkup and welfare packages.
