A report by an American Think tank Organisation, Pew Research Centre shows that 6 of the top ten countries in the world with the largest Christian population will be African comes 2060.
The report that was released in 2019 shows that more than half (52%) of the world’s Christians live in countries other than those with the 10 largest Christian populations.
As at 2015, only 3 African countries are in the top ten of countries with the highest Christian population in the world. Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ethiopia occupied 6th, 7th and 9th position on the top ten table, making 10.5 percent of the 47.5 percent of the top 10 countries.
The report listed the USA, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Philippines, Nigeria, DRC, China, Ethiopia and Germany as the top ten countries with the highest number of Christians.
But by 2060, Nigeria, DRC, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia will together be in the top ten countries with the highest Christian population, occupying 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th respectively. The six African countries will have 23.8 percent of the 47.7 percent of the top ten countries with most Christian population.
Nigeria is expected to have over 170 millions Christian population by 2060, DRC, 160 millions, Tanzania, 117 millions, Uganda 96 millions, while Kenya and Ethiopia will both have 91 and 87 millions respectively.
The report illustrates the extent to which the population centers for Christians have moved away from it’s historical and traditional hubs. The countries that currently have the highest Population of Christian are in the Americas, that is, the United States, Brazil and Mexico, all occupying 1st, 2nd and 3rd position on the list, rather than the Middle East.
The report stated that “overall, there are about 2.3 billion Christians in the world and 1.8 billion Muslims. That gap is expected to narrow by 2060, when Pew Research Center projects there will be 3 billion Christians and nearly 3 billion Muslims. That’s because Muslims, on average, are younger and have more children than do Christians.”
The country with the highest Christian population, the United States, is expected to remain in that position in 2060. Lower down on the list, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya are expected to be added, while Russia, Germany and China will fall out of the top 10.
By 2060 the top ten list would be the USA, Brazil, Nigeria, DRC, Philippines, Mexico, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia.
