Fourteen-year-old gymnast Stephanie Ogechukwu Onusiriuka has emerged as one of the brightest talents from the recently concluded National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, after winning multiple medals and earning the title of Nigeria’s Best All-Round Gymnast.
The teenager, who has steadily risen through the ranks of Nigerian gymnastics, claimed three gold medals, one silver medal, and a team silver, a performance that drew admiration from fellow athletes and officials alike.
In recognition of her achievements, the National Sports Commission (NSC), in a statement released on its official X handle on September 3, 2025, described Stephanie as “one for the future.” The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing her growth under the elite athlete development programme, aimed at preparing promising young sportsmen and women for international success.
Stephanie’s story is one of consistency and discipline. Over the past few years, she has impressed both locally and internationally, and her latest showing in Asaba has further cemented her reputation as a gymnast to watch. For many observers, her medal haul underscores the importance of early investment in youth sports development, particularly in less-publicized disciplines such as gymnastics.
As Nigeria continues to seek podium finishes at global competitions, the exploits of athletes like Stephanie Onusiriuka serve as a reminder that the future of the country’s sporting excellence rests on identifying and supporting young talents.
