Authorities in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, October 14, confirmed the execution of a man and a woman who were said to have performed what was described as an ‘indecent act’ in one of the mosques in Mecca.
The kingdom’s Ministry of Interior issued a statement regarding the implementation of the execution ruling against the two Bangladesh citizens in the Makkah Al-Mukarramah region.
The ministry said the man, Nuzr Al-Islam Abdul Basir and the woman, Siti Akter, were apprehended by the security agencies while committing the ‘indecent act’ inside one of the mosques in the city.
The investigation carried out by the authorities resulted in charges brought against them for committing the crime.
Upon their referral to the competent court, a ruling was issued confirming what was attributed to them and they were subsequently sentenced to death by execution due to the gravity and severity of what they did by violating the sanctity of the mosque.
The ruling became final after its affirmation by the reference authority, and a royal order was issued to enforce what was decreed by Sharia law against them.
“Therefore, the discretionary execution ruling was carried out against both Nuzr Al-Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akter—both of Bangladeshi nationality—on Wednesday,” the ministry wrote in a statement.
