The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the second term of five years.

Request for Yakubu’s confirmation was sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Senate for a second and final term in office few days ago.

Following the request, the Senate Committee on INEC, led by Senator Kabiru Gaya, made the confirmation at plenary on Tuesday.

Yakubu’s reappointment makes him the first INEC chairman to have his tenure extended by another five years in office.
