The Senate has approved the electronic transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s result viewing portal (IReV), while allowing manual collation to serve as a fallback where technology fails.
The decision followed a reconsideration of a controversial provision in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill during Tuesday’s plenary.
The upper chamber, however, failed to make the process mandatory and also rejected real-time uploads of election results.
The Senate amended the Electoral Act, modifying Clause 60 to require the presiding officer at each polling unit to electronically transmit election results to the IREV portal.
However, if electronic transmission fails due to communication/network issues, the manual result sheet (Form EC8A) would become the primary source for result collation.
More details later…..
