President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has disclosed that the report on the budget defense hearings for the N54.2 trillion proposed budget for 2025 will soon be tabled before the Senate for consideration in a plenary session.
In a statement to the Senate, Akpabio confirmed that the Committee on Appropriations would present its budget defense report on either Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
He made the announcement regarding the budget defense report during the Senate’s plenary session on Tuesday, immediately after the chamber deliberated on a bill to establish a Federal University of Agriculture in Abak, Akwa Ibom State.
He highlighted the pressing need for the chamber to expeditiously conclude its deliberations on the proposed 2025 budget.
“You will observe that some of our colleagues are not in the chamber because of the required final touches on the 2025 Appropriation Bill report, which will be laid before us tomorrow, Wednesday, or Thursday this week.
“We need to close early to allow for collective efforts in that direction for final consideration and passage of the 2025 Appropriation Bill,” he stated.
At the outset of the Senate’s plenary session, the upper chamber successfully passed five bills on first reading, including the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended) Alteration Bill 2025, the Armed Forces Act Amendment Bill 2025, and the Federal Medical Centres Act Amendment Bill 2025, among others.
Additionally, the Senate passed for second reading a bill to amend the Federal University of Agriculture Act, aiming to establish the Federal University of Agriculture in Abak, Akwa Ibom.
The bill was then referred to the Senate’s Committee on Agriculture for further evaluation and potential amendments. The committee will analyze the bill’s provisions in detail, seeking to enhance its effectiveness and feasibility.
