Shekarau calls for 2014 confab, Dantata nods parliamentary system of govt
Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, a former Governor of Kano State, has urged President Bola Tinubu to implement some of the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference Report on community policing and restructuring.
Shekarau, also a former Minister of Education, made the call on Thursday which featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
“I have gone through that document. It was during (Goodluck) Jonathan’s government. He personally handed it over publicly at Eagle Square to President (Muhammadu) Buhari and nothing was done about it.
“I’ll advise President Tinubu to dust it up. May be set up a small committee to review it and see things that are doable. Most of these things that we are talking about are there.”
The former Minister advocated state police and restructuring that “allows bottom-up structure of government. There should be some participation of the people correctly”.
Shekarau added that Nigeria needs community policing owned by the community, while the government would be the coordinator.
Meanwhile, a prominent northern elder statesman, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, has reacted to a recent call for Nigeria to transition to parliamentary system of government.
Recall that 60 lawmakers in the House of Representatives had moved for a constitutional amendment for a change of government from presidential to parliamentary.
Reacting to the move on Thursday, Dantata said parliamentary system of government is more cost effective and less cumbersome.
The nonagenarian stated this when some members of the House of Representatives spearheading the transition move paid him a consultation visit at his Kano residence.
“Parliamentary system is better and cheaper for Nigeria but the presidential system is very costly, especially with the current economic situation in the country,” he said.
Dantata, a member of parliament in the First Republic, lauded the members for taking the bold step and expressed hope that the 60 lawmakers would get more members in the National Assembly to support the project.
“I hope and pray that you will get more members in the assembly to support the project,” he said.
He prayed that the current security challenges bedeviling the country would come to an end.
