The Sokoto State Government has approved the payment of school fees for all students of Sokoto origin currently studying in various tertiary institutions within and outside the state.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu made the announcement in Sokoto at the weekend, describing the gesture as part of his administration’s commitment to easing the financial burden on students and their families.
According to him, the initiative is designed to ensure that no Sokoto indigene is denied access to higher education due to financial constraints. He added that the state government is determined to revive the scholarship scheme and restore public confidence in the education sector.
Officials of the Ministry for Higher Education confirmed that funds have already been released to cover tuition for students across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Beneficiaries are expected to verify their details with the scholarship board to facilitate payment.
The governor explained that the intervention is in line with his “nine-point agenda” which prioritises human capital development, stressing that education remains the bedrock of progress in the state. He urged the students to justify the government’s investment by working hard and being good ambassadors of Sokoto.
Parents and students have welcomed the move, describing it as a timely relief amid the rising cost of living. “This has lifted a huge burden off many families,” said Abdullahi Bello, father of one of the beneficiaries.
Governor Aliyu further assured that his administration would continue to provide learning opportunities, rehabilitate schools, and invest in infrastructure to raise the standard of education across Sokoto State.
