In order to encourage young children to engage in sport activities and other extracurricular activities, the government at all levels have been advised to give sport scholarships to pupils as a way of improving the sporting activities of the country.
This advice was given by Parents of pupils of Lela Blossom School in Abuja recently during the Inter-House Sports competition organized by the school. According to the Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Dr Wale Funsho, ‘government can encourage pupils to show more interest and enthusiast in sports by giving sport scholarships to children at early years.’
“The government can encourage extra curriculum activities by giving out sport scholarships because it is from ages like these that we can catch them young. A crash approach will not solve the problems we have in various sports today,” he said.
The proprietress of the school, Mrs Abiola Oduwusi said the Inter House sport competition was organized to give the children the opportunity to discover and use their sporting talents.
“We are giving them the opportunity to develop fully. Doing something like this can help children with talents to develop.
“In Lela Blossom School, we put a lot of priority on extracurricular activities because we believe that it adds up to learning. It helps a child to be fully grounded. It gives a kind of confidence to the children and beyond that, it breads innovation and inventions,” she said.
Oduwusi also advised government at the local government level to give attention to sports facilities in every community. She was of the opinion that such facilities would avail children that are not privileged to visit private sporting facilities to also develop their skills.
“I wish our leaders can give attention to sport community facilities development. A lot of schools are striving to do this but they don’t have the capacity.
A representative of the Department of Quality Assurance of the Education Secretariat of the FCTA, Uzodiegwu Anthonia explained that the new government curriculum emphasizes on skills and entrepreneurship which sports is part of. She commended the school for organizing the sporting completion.
The Lela Blossom School Inter-House sport is the 3rd edition organized by the school and it featured, both track and field competitions.
