Nigeria’s quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup enters a decisive phase next month as the Super Eagles gear up for crunch fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced on Monday that the national team’s camp will open on 1 September in Uyo, five days ahead of their Group C clash with Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on 6 September. Three days later, the Eagles will fly to Bloemfontein to face South Africa at the Free State Stadium on 9 September.
Nigeria finds itself under mounting pressure after a stuttering campaign that has produced only one victory in six matches. The Eagles’ lone triumph came in Kigali against Rwanda, while three draws and a shock defeat to Benin Republic have left them fourth in the group with seven points.
Group leaders South Africa sit comfortably on 13 points, followed by Rwanda and Benin on eight each, while Lesotho and Zimbabwe trail with six and four respectively. With just four rounds of matches left, Nigeria must take maximum points from the September fixtures to keep their qualification hopes alive. Only the group winner qualifies automatically for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has yet to unveil his squad list, but the announcement is expected in the coming days. In the meantime, the NFF is finalising travel and logistical arrangements as Chelle concludes duties at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Tanzania, where Nigeria’s home-based team exited early after defeats to Senegal and Sudan.
The focus now shifts fully to salvaging Nigeria’s World Cup dream. The Super Eagles’ absence from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after losing to Ghana in the playoffs, remains a sore memory for millions of fans. A repeat failure in 2026 would represent a devastating blow to the country’s footballing pride.
For Chelle and his men, the coming clashes against Rwanda and South Africa are more than just qualifiers – they are battles for redemption and survival on the road to North America.
