Tinubu Administers Oath of Office to Kekere-Ekun as Nigeria’s 23rd CJN
President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the country’s judicial history. This ceremony follows her confirmation by the Senate on September 25, 2024.
The investiture ceremony for Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as Chief Justice of Nigeria took place in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday
Embarking on the solemn rite of passage that would seal her appointment as Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kekere-Ekun stepped forth into the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja where she recited her oath of office and inscribed her signature upon the weighty register, thus assuming the mantle of responsibility for the highest judicial office in the land.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has taken over the reins as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, succeeding Justice Olukayode Ariwoola who had a remarkable tenure, leading the judiciary from June 27, 2022, until his retirement on August 22, 2024, when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70.
Monday’s swearing-in ceremony was attended by an impressive lineup of esteemed guests, including four of her predecessors. Notably, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, the trailblazing first female Chief Justice of Nigeria, was in attendance, alongside Justice Mahmud Mohammed and Justice Walter Onnoghen ¹. Also present was her immediate predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
Family members and fellow Supreme Court justices were in attendance as Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun took her oath of office for the second time in Five weeks.
