President Bola Tinubu is considering diplomatic options for the early release of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu who was jailed by a court in Britain for his involvement in organ trafficking.
Ike Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison on May 5, 2023 by the Oxford Crown Court for organ trafficking, specifically for conspiring to bring a young Nigerian man to the UK to harvest his kidney for their daughter, Sonia.
However, a source in the United Kingdom disclosed that President Tinubu sent a high-level delegation who met with officials at the UK Ministry of Justice to discuss the case of Ekweremadu.
Members of the delegation included Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar; Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, as well as other top officials from the two ministries.
On their arrival in London, the members of the delegation were received at the Nigerian High Commission in London by Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu, the Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
They are expected to continue the meeting with the British Justice Ministry officials from tomorrow over the early freedom for the embattled former Deputy Senate President.
